We may joke about it as a “natural part of life”, but the ravaging effects of stress on our bodies are very real. In the increasingly fast-paced (and kooky) world we live in, scientists now call it “the silent killer”.
Whenever we feel stress, we secrete a hormone called cortisol. Though we need a certain level of cortisol to operate, too much is dangerous -which can lead to disease and weight gain.
Stress is anything that raises our stress hormones, which means insufficient eating, nutrient deficiencies, or lack of sleep. Regular exercise (not food!) is the non-negotiable ingredient for keeping our cortisol levels balanced.
The reason why dance-based exercise, like Mojo, are tops for de-stressing is best explained by Robert Thayer, PhD, a psychology professor at California State University…
Studies show that the type of exercise you do can create “tense energy” – an effective state that allows us to get lots of work done but can quickly move into tense tiredness, a negative state often associated with depression (higher cortisol levels).
On the other hand, “calm energy” is a combination of a high physical and mental energy level, paired with low physical tension. The “calm state” offers more long-lasting energy (lower cortisol levels) and can be achieved with the right type of exercise (Mojo!).
While Mojo is a serious workout, focusing on fun new ways to move allows the brain and body a brief endorphin-soaked escape.
