Our Two Brain Networks: Where Logic and Creativity Meet

Such a special moment! My granddaughter, Elodie (20 months), joined her mama, Jess, for their very first Mojo Online LIVEstream session last week – dancing right along with us from their home in NY.

Elo’s wide-eyed wonder for movement is contagious and irresistible (Click here for our Facebook or Instagram video) . What starts as play builds so much more — early movement strengthens coordination, rhythm, and brain connections that last a lifetime.

Whenever I see Elodie dance, I’m reminded of how naturally we once moved — full of play, curiosity, and that beautiful lack of self-consciousness. Somewhere along the way, that freedom fades. Not because we lose it…but because our brain starts taking over.

The Two Sides of the Dance

As children, we’re guided by curiosity and rhythm.

As adults, we’re guided by the Executive Control Network – the part of our brain that plans, organizes, and manages goals. It’s the (buzzkill) voice in our head that says:

“Am I burning enough calories?”
“Do I look fat in this outfit?”
“You’ll look silly if you mess up”
“You don’t have time for this.”

Meanwhile, our Default Mode Network (DMN) – the part that fuels imagination, emotion, and intuition – gets quieter. It’s the daydreamer, the empath, the artist. The lighter voice in our head that says:

“Let’s make this up as we go along.”
“I look hot in this outfit!”
“What if I tried that step my own way?”
“I’m gonna color outside the lines a little.”

Our two brain networks are supposed to converse like dance partners, but modern life tends to silence one in favor of the other, resulting in too much focus and not enough flow.

With all the uncertainty in our lives right now, that imbalance is even louder. We’re running on overdrive. Our brains are in constant “do” mode, our bodies stuck in alert.

When we move to music, laugh, and let go of control, we help our two sides reconnect. We’re not just improving focus and creativity – we’re soothing our nervous system. We’re stimulating the vagus nerve – our body’s natural reset switch. It’s the main highway between brain and body, signaling safety, calm, and connection. Each deep breath, each shared rhythm, tells our body, “You’re safe. You can breathe again.”

Right-Brained or Left-Brained — Both

In the old days, we used to say people were either right-brained or left-brained, creative or logical, emotional or analytical. But neuroscience now shows it’s not a competition between hemispheres, it’s a conversation between networks.

Our creativity, clarity, and sense of joy depend on how well these two systems — the Executive Control Network (ECN) and the Default Mode Network (DMN) — work together. The ECN gives us focus, structure, and direction. The DMN brings imagination, empathy, and meaning.

When they’re in balance, something powerful happens:

✨ We feel grounded but free.

✨ Focused but flexible.

✨ Productive yet playful.

That’s when movement feels effortless — and life feels full of possibility.

How Dance Fitness Lights Up Both

Every Mojo session creates a neural duet — a full-brain workout that strengthens both sides of the mind.

  • The music and rhythm awaken the Default Mode Network – our emotional, creative brain.

  • The choreography and intervals engage the Executive Control Network – our focused, coordinated brain.

  • The laughter, community, and play connect them, forming new pathways of communication that boost memory, resilience, and joy.

This isn’t just about moving our bodies — it’s about training our brains to flow and focus at the same time.

Keep the Conversation Going

Each time we show up, we’re doing more than exercising, we’re reconnecting the parts of ourselves that make life full.

The doer and the dreamer.

The thinker and the feeler.

The focus and the flow.

When those two sides move in sync, energy skyrockets, creativity sparks, and life feels lighter.

Movement builds momentum, and momentum builds joy.
Make it happen this week!
